Longleaf is being developed from part of the Starkey Ranch, a working ranch in Pasco County founded in 1937 by J.B. Starkey.

The Starkey family tree is firmly rooted in the Tampa Bay area. J. B. Starkey Sr. (1895-1989) amassed 16,000 acres of cattle ranch land in Pasco County at the headwaters of the Anclote and Pithlachascotee rivers, known as Anclote River Ranch. While 13,000 acres are preservation land, Starkey's grandsons, Jay B "Trey" Starkey III and Frank Straub Starkey, have chosen to develop a small portion of their family's land into the community of Longleaf.

The brothers were taught respect for the land by their father, environmental visionary J.B. Starkey Jr., and believe that it is possible to develop it in a manner that preserves the environment.
